Fielding Drills: High Catch Warm-Up

Purpose:  To practice high catches in a pre-game/training warm up situation

Description: There are 2 balls in the game, starting in opposite corners. At the same time, fielders lob the ball up into space for a fielder to run and catch the ball about halfway.

Purpose: Develop the ability to accelerate, decelerate and change direction while ground fielding a ball.

Description: 4 cones are set out in a square. The fielder has to run in a figure of eight touching each cone and fielding/returning the balls fed by the coach in the order show in the diagrams.

Purpose: To practice three skills in a row: underarm pickup and throw, chase and throw and a high catch.

Description: The wicketkeeper (w) rolls the ball towards the first fielder who runs, picks up and underarm throws the ball back to the wicketkeeper.

Fielding Drills: Sprint and Throw

Purpose: To develop straight ahead speed, acceleration and stopping followed by the skills of picking up and throwing.

Description: Player 1 sprints forwards as fast as possible to intercept the ball rolled by the coach/keeper. Player 2 sets off at a sprint after player 1 runs past.

You never see a good side with a bad wicketkeeper.

By definition a team that is taking wickets has to have a brave, alert and vocal gloveman who holds his catches and keeps fielding standards high. Despite this, wicketkeeping skills are often ignored at practice.
