CRICKET JOBS: Director of Cricket Academy - Royal Hospital School (UK)

A position has become available following the forthcoming retirement of Don Topley, who has been overseeing cricket at the Royal Hospital School, Suffolk, for 23 years.

The Royal Hospital School is an HMC Co-educational Full Boarding and Day School situated on the banks of the River Stour, on the borders of Suffolk and Essex. It is on a beautiful 200 acre campus and has 96 acres of playing fields. RHS has five grass wickets, three astro wickets and a set of five hard practice nets and are about to undertake some investment in the cricket facilities.

Cricket plays a significant role in the life of RHS and is the major sport in the Summer Term.

The Role:

1. Strategic Aims

  •     To establish a high profile centre of cricketing excellence, which develops elite young cricketers to fulfil their potential.
  •     To promote participation at all levels and ages, including girls’ cricket.
  •     To enhance the reputation of cricket at RHS as a recruitment and retention tool.
  •     To develop sustainable income streams for reinvestment in the School’s cricket and sporting facilities.


2. Responsibilities of DCA

2.1 RHS

Coaching of all School cricket teams including circa 25 elite cricketers and girls’ cricket as follows:

  •     (A) Michaelmas Term: One2Ones / Year 7s (B) Lent Term: One2ones / Year groups (C) Summer Term: fixtures
  •     Administration of fixtures, transport to away matches, and home facilities.
  •     Oversight of the preparation of pitches and wickets.
  •     Management of sports graduates and the many teaching staff volunteers.
  •     Attendance at Open Mornings and visit days.


2.2 Outreach

Develop relationships with primary feeder schools in the region (eg. Mistley, Colchester, Woolpit). Work closely with national and regional cricketing bodies such as ECB, Essex CCB, Cambs CCB and Suffolk CCB. Support the International Marketing Manager through attendance at international recruitment fairs.

2.3 Commercial Income Generation

Manage the annual Minor Counties Cricket Festival (‘MCCF’) at RHS. Deliver non-residential and/or residential summer schools at RHS. Deliver winter training clubs. One2One specialist coaching sessions for youngsters from local schools (including RHS), groups and clubs. Support fund-raising dinners.

3. Responsibilities of RHS

Provision of facilities – oversee cricket pitches/wickets, fitness suite, strength & conditioning, and sports hall with four indoor nets. Marketing of the Cricket Academy. Financial management of the cricket areas.

4. Remuneration of DCA (subject to negotiation)

Basic salary for the delivery of 2.1 above. Bonus for the successful delivery of 2.2 above. Share of profits from 2.3 above. Accommodation may be available on site for the right candidate.
