CSA (Cricket South Africa/Company) is the national governing body for the sport of cricket in South Africa and administers all aspects of South African cricket.

A new position for a High Performance Physiotherapist has become available. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and providing the physiotherapy services required for the High Performance Departmental programmes - Proteas Women; Male and Female National Academies; Emerging XI and SA U/19 - within the guidelines provided by the CSA Medical Committee, and liaising and supporting the efforts of the various Team Management structures in achieving results on the field of play.

The role will report to the High Performance Manager and is integral to the effective and efficient functioning of the Cricket Services Department.

The more important criteria for the appointment is set out below and although not exhaustive, would serve as a guideline in assessing all prospective candidates.

Main job duties/responsibilities:

The High Performance Physiotherapist is responsible for managing and providing the physiotherapy services for the High Performance Departmental programmes as stated above. Key performance areas include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide physiotherapy services to all of the High Performance programmes with reference to global best practice in cricket during training, camps, academy and tour matches;
  • Where there is an overlap in programmes, the High Performance Physiotherapist will be responsible to prioritise his/her duties and also recommend a temporary replacement to the High Performance Manager for the period he/she is not able to attend to a particular programme;
  • Develop an integrated approach with the CSA High Performance Coaching Management and Conditioning Coaches regarding the current health, treatment and prevention of injuries, medical status of all cricketers and the impact of their status on the squad;
  • Communicate all relevant injury matters and management plans immediately to the programme Head Coach of the relevant team;
  • Derive a management and logistics plan regarding attendance for consultations - identify, evaluate, diagnose, treat and initial rehabilitation and pre habilitation of all cricket players on training, camps,academy and tour matches;
  • Order and provide all medical supplies (as recommended and procured by CSA), recovery garments and supplements required for the High Performance programmes; 2
  • Create and maintain a database of relevant information on the Peformax Management system relating to the High Performance programme with a view to share such information with Coaching staff and the CSA Medical Committee. This includes keeping the relevant medical segment of CSA's performance monitoring information system up to date;
  • Interact and provide relevant and regular information and reports to Coaching staff, CSA High Performance Manager and relevant CSA sub-committees;
  • Provide individual and squad training, camps, academy and tour reports;
  • Perform other reasonable duties as instructed by the company; and
  • Ad hoc project involvement.


The following are essential requirements pertaining to the candidate’s skills, qualifications and experience:

  • A degree or diploma in Physiotherapy or similar qualification as a Physiotherapist and current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA);
  • At least 3 years working experience of high performance athletes in the processes for injury prevention, injury diagnoses and evidence based successful rehabilitation;
  • Proven experience in monitoring and evaluating diagnostic systems and rehab processes;
  • Proven ability to effectively work with a wide range of sports individuals from varied backgrounds;
  • Superior persuasion skills combined with integrity, prudence and professionalism;
  • Have a valid driver’s licence;
  • Understand current scientific methods and be familiar with the published literature and;
  • Be willing to travel locally and internationally, as required.


In addition, the following would be important:

Successful candidate will be based at the CSA Powerade Centre of Excellence, LC de Villiers Sports Grounds, HPC, Burnett Street, Hatfield, Pretoria.
