Reflection on the Season So Far

We are approaching the mid-season break for Christmas so I thought I'd write a few words about reflecting on your performance so far this summer.

At a very basic level, everyone will assess their season so far in terms of statistics. That is fair enough, cricket is a game of numbers and players should realise that it is their numbers that will progress them in the game (or keep them back).

But lets not just dwell on the figures - giving the season a tick or a cross according to the number of wickets taken or runs scored. Spend a bit more time, be totally honest with yourself, and reflect on the processes you are using as well as the results your have achieved. Review your success in the context of the goals you set yourself in the winter and  remember: the season is not over yet.

If your numbers reflect a successful season so far, take the time to acknowledge that and work hard at applying the same processes that have worked for you thus far.

If on the other hand, you are unhappy with your numbers, make sure you have really applied yourself to performing the processes you put in place pre-season. Be as honest as possible with yourself when doing this. Before abandoning a training program of a set of processes, give them your total focus for the next few weeks and see if things turn around.

If you really want to change your processes, work at fine tuning rather than radical change and devote some extra time to putting the changes into place within the next few weeks. Then give them time to work.

My usual advice at this time of year is:

Reflect on your EFFORT as well as your results. Make a renewed effort to apply the processes you put in place in the winter and assess your performance at seasons end!

Good luck to everyone and have a safe and happy Christmas!
