Quick Tip: How to Get the Team Together Again

Filed in:

Bonga writes in with good career news and a problem,

"Next year I'm gonna be captain of my school Under 13 team. There is lots of arguing in team and feels very divided. How do I get the team together again?"

Sounds like a political nightmare.

Lucky for Bonga, it's probably not as bad as he thinks.

There is a theory in the world of team dynamics that all teams (in sport and business) have to go through a stage like this. It's called "storming" and is a normal step in the process of becoming an effective team.

During this phase discussion is frank and conflicts often happen as people work through what they feel is best for the team and themselves.

So the answer is simple; let this process happen.

In fact, you should encourage it.

If 4 players think they should open the bowling then talk about it, work out what is the best plan between you and go with it.

The worst that happens is that the plan fails. Then you try something else.

Eventually everyone will argue themselves out and the team will start working together. Everyone realises you won't get far if you simply look after your own interests.

So get those fights going. As long as actually throws a punch then it's all part of the journey.
