Quick Tip: Play Funky Shots

Filed in:

The classic image of the coach is telling the batsman to "keep your elbow up and play straight". It's good advice, but it's time to change.

Young players love to emulate their heroes; even older players do. So why restrict yourself? Give it a go.

Of course, if you do nothing but play switch hits you will be an ineffective batsman. Even KP picks his moments. But you can learn, play and enjoy new fangled shots.

As long as you do it in context.

Want an example? Picture this scene:

You are playing a one day match with 28 runs needed in 4 overs. You walk out to bat at number 5 with a well set batsman at the other end. All you need to do is get the single and let the other guy do the heavy lifting.

But you are fresh to the crease and the spinner is bowling flat. You try to late cut a couple and miss. The pressure builds. At the end of the over your partner says "just get that single!".

If you play orthodox you are trapped unless you get a ball to hit in the V. If you pull the reverse sweep, or sweep, out of the toolbox you can pick up that run easily.

There are many, many more examples.

So, spend some time thinking about the situations that you bat in. Then go to nets and play scenario cricket where you can try those shots.

That's a million miles from just saying "I'm doing Twenty20" and swiping at everything just to feel bat on ball (yes, I know you have done it. We all have).

Play your shots, build your confidence but keep it in context.
