Quick Tip: Read This if You Need A Kick in the Behind

Jim Wendler, professional badass, has some advice for you:

"I don't care when or how you get this done, and I don't care whether it happens on your off days or not. Do it when you have time. Make time for it. Just get it done. Nobody ever got strong or got in shape by thinking about it. They did it."

He's taking about strength and conditioning but the plain speak applies just as much to cricket skills.

You can ponder and wonder as much as you like. Cricket lends itself to a lot of thinking with all that time on your hands. But what really counts is the basic units: facing balls, bowling balls, catching, stopping and throwing.

There are many methods, drills and tools to help you improve. Try as many as you can and think about which ones are working best by all means.

But it all starts with getting out there and doing it.

You will get it wrong more than you get it right. It's called trial and error for a reason. That's OK. Everything you learn when you make a mistake means you won't make the same one again. That means you are one step closer to what works.

I would much rather hear from a reader who starts an email "I tried..." than one who says "how do I...". Neither is wrong, but the former shows an attitude of piling in and trying things, no matter what advice he gets.

So, do your research, buy your tools, think about your game, but when you find that analysis is paralysing, get back to the simple thing: get out there and do it.
