Closing date: 25th September 2014

Title: Project Panel Umpire

Function: Cricket Operations

Location: Melbourne

Employment Type: Contract

Job Description

Cricket Australia (CA) is one of the nation’s premier sporting bodies, and provides an exciting, dynamic environment within the sports and entertainment industry. CA is responsible for overseeing and developing cricket on a national level.

In 2001 CA implemented a strategic plan focused on aligning umpiring across Australia and improving umpiring at the elite level – i.e. a major focus of the plan was to produce better umpires at the First Class and International levels of the game. One of the initiatives to arise from this plan was the development of a CA Project Panel for umpiring which targeted former players who were interested in turning their hand to umpiring. The theory was that former players had already built a lot of experience and expertise of the game, had an affinity for the on-field workplace environment, and that an individual with the right attitude, work ethic and support could become a successful umpire.

This has proven to be a successful initiative and Cricket Australia is keen to continue this project. As such we are seeking suitable candidates for this coming 2014-15 season who are keen and enthusiastic about cricket and umpiring. We currently have two positions available on the CA Project Panel, one for a male umpire and one for a female umpire.

Ideally candidates will have many or all of the following characteristics:

  • Have a positive attitude and are team-focussed.
  • Have an interest in and a suitable disposition to umpiring.
  • Are a self-starter who is accountable for their actions and take pride in their own development.
  • Are prepared to work hard as they develop through grade/club cricket levels. History has shown that it takes several years before an umpire is prepared and ready to reach the First Class level.
  • Value integrity and respect the game.
  • Are able to use umpiring to complement work or study, not as the sole means for employment.

Preference will be given to applicants in accordance with the following:

  • Individuals who have already tried umpiring
  • Individuals who have played First Class cricket (males) or WNCL/WT20 cricket (females)

CA will initially provide the successful Project Panel Umpires with a one year contract for the financial year ending 30 June 2015. At the conclusion of each season a performance appraisal process is conducted and, if earned, a contract extension will be granted. Project Panel umpires will be required to complete the relevant training and accreditation courses prescribed by CA within their own State Association umpiring program. In addition, CA will provide individual professional development opportunities and will closely monitor the progression of each umpire throughout their development.

Please note that applicants can be based in any Australian capital city but must be available to attend meetings in Melbourne or interstate as the needs arise. Forward planning and notice will be provided.

Applications must be made online by 25 September 2014.
