Quick Tip: You're Biased

We are all biased.

Humans are a bundle of biases and contradictions that we live with happily. It's hard to recognise and you think you are being fair and reasonable when you are often far from the truth. While many times a useful bias is useful, it can backfire.

Take the common "positive expectation bias".

We assume that if we have had a low run of scores then a big one is coming soon. The idea has even entered cliché when a coach in a press conference says "he's due a big score".

In reality, no such pattern exists.

Run scoring is the result of good training, good skills and good luck. Some of these things are in our control, some are not. What is clear is that none of them are controlled a balancing run God that makes sure you get a score after a run of ducks.

Of course, it's useful to hope for the best, while preparing for the worst. That's where a positive expectations can relax you and let you feel confident that you will get runs. But it's dangerous to rely on being due a score.

The take home message here is simple: Know that you have biases and know what they are so you can use them to your advantage while avoiding the pitfalls.
