CRICKET JOBS: Head of Cricket - Caterham School (UK)

Closing date: 21st February 2016

Sport is an integral part of life at Caterham School. By keeping pupils fit, building character and developing a healthy competitive spirit, it contributes to creating an environment in which all pupils are challenged to be the best they can be. Look behind our excellent facilities and dedicated coaching teams, however, and you will also find the ambition to succeed at the highest level, and nowhere is this more evident than in cricket.

With alumni including David Sales (Northamptonshire, England A) and Ali Brown (Surrey, Nottinghamshire and England), we are now looking for a suitably qualified professional to take responsibility for the coaching and management of cricket throughout the school.

As you would expect of a school that regularly has representatives in the Surrey school squads, our coaching expertise and facilities that are second to none. We have two state-of-the-art bowling machines and use video analysis to help pupils identify and address weaknesses in their game, for example. We are also refurbishing our outdoor and indoor nets, and have some of the best pitches in the South of England.  You will use your extensive experience of cricket teaching and coaching to promote the pursuit of cricketing excellence among pupils aged 11 to 18. This will include encouraging participation, running coaching sessions, organising master classes by professional cricketers and entering talented pupils for county trials.

You will also mentor a group of athletes as part of the Caterham Athlete Programme (CAP), which aims to provide our most talented athletes with everything they need to reach national representative honours and prepares them for a life in professional sport.

Along with relevant cricket teaching and coaching experience, you will need proven ability to contribute to whole school thinking on sports provision and the process of learning and teaching outside the classroom. You will certainly understand the contribution of sport to the school’s wider development and improvement, and you must have evidence of a recognised ability to motivate and encourage participation in activities by both pupils and staff.

While the ability to coach one of the school’s other main sports, or to teach an academic subject, is desirable, it is not a prerequisite for the job. Nor is being a qualified PE teacher. You must, however, combine a level 2 or 3 coaching qualification with first-class interpersonal, oral and written skills.  You will also need the ability to manage all the other aspects of cricket at the school, from equipment and budgets to sharing the latest coach information and best practice with other coaches.

As one of the leading co-educational schools in the UK, Caterham offers you generous remuneration and ongoing professional development opportunities.  It is well-placed for access to town and country: the beautiful two hundred acre site is five minutes’ drive from Junction 6 of the M25, twenty minutes’ drive from Gatwick and a short walk from the local station, with several trains an hour into London.
