Quick Tip: Train for Bad Times

One easy habit at nets is training for when things are going well. You imagine you are on target with bat or ball.

But cricket doesn't work like that: Teams collapse with the bat and find it impossible to break a partnership with the ball. So, we need to train for those times where it's all going wrong.

It's easy to do. Simply put yourself into a "distaster scenario", either as middle practice or in nets.

When you step in to have your bat, instead of saying "I'm practicing my death hitting" and slogging everything, consider you are walking in at 85-6 with 27 overs left to bat. I'm sure you have been in a similar situation in your matches. How will you play?

When you are bowling, imagine the score is 120-1 after 31 overs. What field will you have? What areas will you bowl? How will you get your wickets?

After the session, review how it went. Did your plan work? Can you tweak it?

Coming up with plans and practices for these situations is the best way to give yourself a chance of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
