The myth of unhealthy food

Filed in:

buns.jpgName me a couple of foodstuffs that you would count as unhealthy. Chocolate? Doughnuts? Anything deep fried?

You can probably come up with more given enough time.

We have all been conditioned over the years to think of food as healthy or unhealthy, fattening or slimming, good for sport or bad for sport, guilty or good.

It took me a long time to realise that this is far too simplistic a view of eating no matter what your goals are.

When you break it down, the whole idea that a single foodstuff (let alone a whole macronutrient like fat or carbs) can be unhealthy is about as sensible as running on ice with a pair of newly sharpened scissors.

It's all about context.

  • Some people say fat is bad because it is higher in calories but fat is also an essential nutrient to the body that can aid in fat loss and muscle gain.
  • Some people say fruit juice is healthy because it's made from fruit but much of it is made from concentrate and so high in sugar.
  • Some people say low carb eating is healthier but carbs are the best way to recover and repair your muscles after intense exercise.
  • Some people say too much protein can cause health problems while others say you may need more to meet your goals.

From just these examples you can see how important the context of what is eat is just as important as each individual meal.

Are you looking at the big picture? What's your context?
