Extra Man: How to be a Stand In at Higher Cricket Levels
It was 8pm on Friday night. Ryan's phone buzzed with a new Facebook message.
"We have had a drop out, can you play in the first team tomorrow?"
The young man's heart sank. He knew what that meant: In the second team he could enjoy a jolly 40 overs at home, getting a bat and a few overs with the ball. In the firsts he is a utility: a fielder, batting at seven or eight and no chance of bowling.
Plus the game is a 40 minute drive and ten overs per innings longer. He is supposed to be going out Saturday night!
He grudgingly accepts because he is a team man. He knows his afternoon of cricket will be wasted.
Cricket Show 271: Competition Winner

This week's winner of the Cricket Show podcast question competition is Vipal. He wins a free coaching course from PitchVision Academy.
The winning question was:
"I am a 17 years old off spinner. It is off season in Australia right and wet too. Because of that I mostly end up bowling at my own house in front of the mirrors. I have tried several actions and seeing various actions of off spinners (Swanny, Saqlain, Lyon) on YouTube I am trying to perfect myself. However after several days I start questioning my action and run up I was happy with. Due to this I'm always self conscious and can't sleep properly (no joke) Is this harming me? If it is how can I get settled on a good action? How do you gather momentum from runup to your point of delivery?"

You Might get a Kick Out of My Weekend Batting Revelation
Isn't it great when you find something that clicks in your game?
This week I missed the usual training session at my club, so I arranged to get to the ground early to "have a net" with a couple of other guys in the team.
As you know my feelings about nets, you know how I am not keen to just have a hit, but I hoped it would be better that going into the game totally cold.
As there were just two of us to start, and neither of us bowl to first team standard, we got out the bowling machine.
As you know my feelings about bowling machines, you know I would much prefer real bowling, but that wasn't an option.
Yet, that 20 minutes was a revelation that will give you quite the kick.

Quick Tip: Swing Bowling Drill

It's hard to work on swing bowling with a batsman in the way, so if you want to work on the techniques of swing, take away the batter and try this drill.
Set up a pitch with 2 extra sets of stumps like so:
Field Settings: Hook, Line and Sinker
Hook, line and sinker: literally.
Using a "leg theory" approach, and the English desire to win by hooking, Dhoni won the 2nd Test against England.
Could it work for you too?
I'm going to say yes.
In certain situations, you can use a similar tactic. It's risky, but Dhoni and Sharma proved that it can win you games when orthodox tactics are seeing you cruise to defeat.
Lets look at the details.
Good Enough for Dhoni: 4 More Village Tactics to Try
In the 2nd Test against England, Dhoni stood back to the spinner.
It's a tactic regularly employed in lower standard games where the keeper doesn't have the confidence to stand up. In short, it's village cricket.
But there was a method in the madness.
Cricket Show 270: Competition Winner

This week's winner of the Cricket Show podcast question competition is Cameron. He wins a free coaching course from PitchVision Academy.
The winning question was:
I am a 13 year old leg spinner who doesn't spin the ball when bowling at a faster pace than usual. I try to spin the ball whilst bowling faster, but it doesn't really spin as much as it does when I bowl my stock speed which is around 33-35 mph. I don't understand why it isn't spinning if all I am doing to make the ball go quicker is move pull my front arm down quicker. Can you please help as to why this happens and give a possible reason for it?"

Quick Tip: Play Funky Shots

The classic image of the coach is telling the batsman to "keep your elbow up and play straight". It's good advice, but it's time to change.
Young players love to emulate their heroes; even older players do. So why restrict yourself? Give it a go.
Of course, if you do nothing but play switch hits you will be an ineffective batsman. Even KP picks his moments. But you can learn, play and enjoy new fangled shots.
As long as you do it in context.
