I've been encouraging the players I coach to be more single aware recently. That's a tough ask during indoor nets, and it shows.

Since starting a policy of recording every time a player looks for a quick single there have been 4129 balls bowled and 93 quick singles taken. Even taking into account other runs, wickets and play and misses, that's 2278 chances to pick up a single.

Let's say you took 25% of those chances - a low estimate - that's 569 runs missed.

Or in an average 50 over match that translates to another 56 runs.

A total that could even be doubled.

How many more games would you win by taking another 50-100 runs?

So, the simple tip is this; look for those quick singles.

• Make a list with the other batsmen on your team as to where the "stolen" ones can be found: mid on, off the pads, a diving keeper. You will yours.
• Look for a single after every ball you hit, from defensive dead bat to full swing.
• Learn to be a good non-striker and be ready to back up, call early and leg it!

Making a quick single philosophy starts in nets when it's very tough to practice. But if you build that awareness when it's fake you will make it much easier when you are in the middle.
