Questions to avoid

While we love every question, there are a few topics that we have covered in detail in the past. You can still ask if you like but the chances are low that your question will be used. Plus there is a very good chance the answer is already on the site.

I can't land my foot straight on the popping crease as I complete my action. It always points towards gully to as far as point fielder. I have tried correcting this by practicing my bowling of a few steps. However, when I go back to my run up i can't control my landing again. This poses me with two problems - balls angling in to the batsman (I am right handed) and two my balling speed is visibly slower balling from over the wicket than around the wicket. I have noticed I snap over my body harder from around the wicket and am a much better bowler to left handed batsmen. Can you help me to eradicate this landing and also achieve similar speeds from both sides of the wicket??

If there is a leg glance, why is there not an off glance?

Do you think the way we traditionally coach batting as a discrete set of separately named shots is a help or a hindrance when it comes to producing batsmen with a coherent skillset and flexible gameplans?

How can we prevent side strains while bowling?
Is it a biomechanical issue or weak muscles and if so what needs to be strengthened?

Great ones so far! Keep them coming, this thread will remain open.

1)I am not able to play a bouncer properly
2)I am not able to protect my wicket and stay playing for a long time
3)And the most important:Whenever I attempt to play an aggressive shot for four or six I never place that shot properly or time it correctly.I either edge it,get bowled or couldn't middle it

PLEASE HELP ME WITH THESE PROBLEMS

Why are the rules different in tests to that of one day internationals? In test cricket bowlers don't bowl wides as easily, but in one day internationals nearly every ball down the leg side is a wide. In other sports rules don't change so dramatically between the formats. So why does this happen in cricket?

Whenever I bowl leg spin, I always either bowl too short, or have a delivery that has way too much flight and lands at a good length but bounces too high. How can I improve my line without losing any revs or bowling too flat?

While wicket keeping for an off-spinner, many a time, a viscous turner goes through the gap between the bat and pad of the right handed batsman. And those are the one's I tend to mis-collect or totally miss (especially if there's extra bounce) as I lose sight of the ball. Similarly, if the batsman shuffles across to the offside to play a sweep or reverse sweep, he again blocks my view making it hard to collect in case he misses the ball. How do I solve this problem? Any specific drills I can try out?

[I play in KSCA IV Division League, Karnataka, India]

Jacques, the reason for the difference in wides is simple: wickets. In order to win a Test match you need to bowl the opposition out twice, so you need to attack to take wickets. Bowling at the stumps is crucial. Bowling down the leg side is counter-productive.

However in limited overs all you need to do is restrict your opposition to less runs than you. So bowling down the leg side with 6 or 7 men in defence becomes a legit tactic. But that's not very fair to the batting team. So the severe leg side wide came in, forcing bowlers to forgo that tactic.

Personally I think the ruling has gone too far when you see the ball virtually graze leg stump for a "wide" to be called. That's not in the spirit of the regulation at all. But that's a debate for another time.

I meant *vicious*, the spell checker made it *viscous*. Sorry for the error!

Hi,
I have read quite a few articles on pitchvision, and I love the info that you guys so generously put out.
I have a question regarding fielding. Is 'diving' thought of as a skill or something that is inborn in a fielder. Do fielders practice diving at higher levels of cricket? Is there a safe technique to dive regardless of the terrain (grassy vs. dry)?
It would be lovely if you could write an in-depth article on this. Thanks.

My question(s):

With some Premier Leagues switching to a Win/Lose format (e.g. The Birmingham League has this year switched to a mixed Win/Lose and Win/Lose/Draw system for half the season each) how do you see the role of the spinner in the team changing?

Several of the articles here talk about using the spinner as an attacking option in order to take wickets and win the game, but as more leagues switch to Win/Lose and you don't have to take all ten wickets to Win, is there going to become more emphasis on defensive bowling, and will this make the life of the slow bowler even more difficult?

When batting both in the nets and in a match I often have negative thoughts pop into my head, like if I forget to tap my bat on the ground twice I'll think "Oh no, I didn't do that. Now I'm going to get out" or in a match I'll think about what happened in my last innings and think "I got out like that for a low score it might happen again". Occasionally, I think about my technique and what is wrong with it. These sorts of distractions usually lead to me getting out and I know when I play a good innings I don't think negatively but I have no idea how to keep these ideas out of my head! So, how can I keep a clear mind while batting?

I am a top order batsman.I try always to play as straight as possible. But,as soon as the spinners come i find it very difficult to control the ball in my defense. Also,I get double-minded when the ball is in the air that whether to go front or to go back and i misjudge the ball and most of the times in my defense i used to get inside edges more and not on the middle of the bat whereas during facing fast bowlers i am very good at my defense. So,I wanted to know that how could i avoid getting those inside edges and score runs too?..
Thank You.

thank you.

Hello Coach,I wanted to ask you about the batting grip.I have this problem since long time.I have to correct this problem as soon as possible because it is effecting my performance a lot. When i grip the bat i don't feel comfortable nowadays with my natural grip.I have followed the coaching manual i tried all of the grips but none of them is making me comfortable.I have tried to keep my hands close together at the middle of the handle, but my top hand wrist is getting locked. When i grip the bat further top of the handle it sometimes give me satisfaction and comfort. But,when i play shots my bat speed becomes very slow and i am not able to keep the ball on the ground. When i was not knowing about the basic grip .I was holding the bat with my hands far apart,I am holding my bottom hand a bit low and holding the top hand at the top of the handle. This gives me comfort, but according to coaching manual, the hands should be close together at the middle of handle so they work as unison. But,now i don't know what actually has to be done to correct my grip. So,i please request you coach that you please help me with this aspect in detail and if possible suggest a drill to get the muscle memory of that grip.Thank You!

how can i do a spiners

What happens if a fast bowler bowls a full toss ball above the waist height of the batsman and it hits the stumps,is the batsman bowled out or it will be declared as a no ball.batsman is well within the crease, waiting for your early reply

@Sunil

The wording of the laws of cricket is as follows:

Law 42.6

(b) Bowling of high full pitched balls

(i) Any delivery, other than a slow paced one, which passes or would have passed on the full above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease is to be deemed dangerous and unfair, whether or not it is likely to inflict physical injury on the striker.

There is no reference at all to what might happen after the ball has passed the batsman, because it will already be a no-ball at that point, therefore, based on the laws of cricket, the batsman should be given not out and no-ball indicated by the bowler's end umpire.

_However_, having said that, there may be playing conditions that relate to a game you are playing in that override or complement this law, or league rules, which state that should the ball go on to hit the stumps in its normal course of flight, then this should not be considered to be a no-ball.

In addition:

According to Law 42.7, the bowler of a delivery deemed by the umpire to fall into the category above should be classed as "dangerous and unfair bowling" and the bowler should be given a first warning and his captain told. A final warning would follow if the delivery were repeated and should a third incidence occur, the fielding captain should be instructed to remove the bowler from the attack, and he will not be permitted to bowl any further deliveries in the innings.

Should the umpire consider the "dangerous and unfair bowling" to be deliberate (Law 42.Cool, the first and final warnings above should be dispensed with and the bowler be required to be withdrawn from the attack immediately.
