How important are cricket coaches?

Filed in:

While many would disagree, I believe the coach has a vital role in improving your cricket. So why is it that most club players are not using coaches?

The problem seems to stem from the perception of what a coach does in the club game.

At elite level coaches are essential staff. All UK counties have them from youth sides to the first team squad. Many with a host of support staff like psychologists and strength coaches. They work with the captain to build a team and continue to make players better throughout their careers.

While clubs can't follow suit because of the amateur nature of the game, we can change our mindset towards coaching.

In clubs most people consider the job of the coach to teach kids how to play cricket. This is vitally important. The brilliant volunteers who run colts sections in clubs everywhere do a cracking job of getting kids involved, learning the techniques and getting a go. I'd never dare to criticise.

That said, it's not making the most of the opportunity a coach can bring to your club.

Why we need to rethink our attitude to coaches

Even first class players work constantly with coaches on their game. Club players don't like being coached though. It's a funny attitude. I know I have several areas of my game I can improve on (and I ‘m obsessed with getting better).

I'd love a coach at my club to work with. In fact there are several at the club, all of whom work exclusively with under 16's. For me that's a problem and it's not isolated to my club.

Any club who can recognise this will automatically get an edge in the middle. A coach can make you and your team better in a number of important ways.

A good coach is a motivator, organiser, expert communicator and mentor. He or she understands the techniques of the game but they also know the mental demands. The physical requirements of playing are understood as a key component of the game too, not just a side issue.

Technical tips and fielding drills are just one element among many.

As club cricket raises it's standards, as it has been doing over the last few years, the coach will become vitally important to all teams serious about winning.

Get your club on board the idea early.

I would love to have access to cricketers at club level. Just think what I could achieve; psychology, nutrition, conditioning... So why do I not?

Basically, cricketers do not feel they need it. It is still all about 'bat and ball'. They want to improve their bowling speed/throwing accuracy/batting range but do not believe it has anything to do with anything other than technical skills.

Of course technical skills are important and Level 2/3 Cricket Coaches can make a big difference but how do we get the message out that this is not enough? Your forum is great but it is still a long, uphill journey!
