“Howzat Dad? Out Son.” What are your club cricket nightmares?

Filed in:

Club cricketers are a hardy bunch. You have to have a fairly thick skin to put up with some of the stuff we see every week. Not least this parade of shame.

We all have our own stories. I got my own back on a cheat this very season to a mixed response. I'd like to hear your tales too.

The worst game I played in last year was nightmare for a different reason. No cheating involved, just a very low standard all round.

It was a league match during the worst of the 2007 rains (one team had 5 weeks rained off in a row). Lucky for us we were due to play on an artifical strip. Every single other game in a 40 mile radius was off. Not us though.

The rain had stayed off all morning and so we started at 2pm with grim faced determination to complete the match in drab and moist underfoot conditions. Perfect cricket weather.

The rain started at around 2:30 and refused to either go away or get worse than a light drizzle so we shouldered on. The ball got more like soap, the wicket lost any bounce it had but skidded through wickedly, everyone started to fall over and whites slowy became browns.

But we were bowling and wickets were falling and the rain still wasn't that bad. Especially when we knocked them over for a pathetic 98 in just over 30 overs. We had tea early and looked forward to knocking the runs off.

it was still drizzling by the way.

Except it was as close to impossible to bat as could be without being dangerous. They popped on a couple of dobbly medium pacers and we collapsed from the hardly dashing score of 92-5 to 97 all out.

We had lost by a single run. We would have got more points for an abandoned match. The rain stopped about an hour after we had finished. It's enough to make sane men give up, but we were all back next week for more of course.

sunday friendlies are always a nightmare after getting completely blind on the saturday night with the lads and end up waking up in ur changing room the next morning, about half an hour before the start of the friendly against the most village team, and u start to wonder why u always answer "yes, yes" for availability.

It's funny though, you always seem to do better after those nights...

My worst game. In school cricket I got 0/23 off 2 overs when I opened the bowling and in Rep cricket I bowled 4th and got 0/36 off 4. Combined my economy was 9.833.

That was in the two straight games where I bowled.

Not a great day!
