Self case study: Cricket training

Improving your cricket can be a daunting prospect. Where do you start? Whats most important? Will you have the time?

These are the kind of questions I ask myself just as much as a club cricket wicketkeeper/batsman.

As a result, I thought it would be interesting to keep you up to date with my own current cricket programme. Hopefully you will feel inspired by my trials and tribulations.

Remember though, that training to improve your cricket is very personal and very specific. What works (or fails) for me may be different for you.

My Current Cricket Training Programme

Its the end of the season for me now (no cricket in September around here). So this week I have started my recovery phase.

Although I didnt get an injury this year, I have had some knee and ankle niggles so I am glad to cut back on the training.

For at least the next 4 weeks I'll be doing 15-20 minutes on the bike at my gym twice a week. No weights, no running and no cricket. In the last week of this period I will drop back to no training at all. This is so my body is totally rested and ready for beginning the long bulid up of skill and fitness towards April 2007 and the start of the new cricket season.

This week I will also be reviewing my season and planning my psychological skills training. For me, training my mental approach to cricket takes just as much time and effort as the physical side.

I have made a slight change to my diet. As I will be exercising less I will also be cutting down my calorie intake to make sure my body fat doesn’t slide too far upwards. I won’t be on a “diet” (diets tend to be faddy and fail). Instead I will simply make smaller meals and not snack quite as much.
