It was a league match and we had just taken a wicket. A kid of about 15 came out looking nervous, as they often do. I reckon it was one of his first senior cricket games because he looked like a fish out of water.

He was small for his age anyway, and this was exacerbated by the wide framed men that stood around the bat. Our spinner was on. They were sharks circling their prey waiting for the slightest mistake.

He scratched around for a while and we soon came to the conclusion he was not going to last long. That was until he got a half volley on leg stump. He unleashed one of the finest on drives I have seen. The ball raced to the long boundary in a blur.

It's a scene that you can see at every level of cricket all over the world.

Why it is that seemingly 'weak' players like that kid can hit the ball so hard?

I have watched my fair share of baseball throwing mechanics and drills and my question is about arm slots. In baseball, players all have different throwing techniques. Many videos talk about the throwers 'arm slots' varying from vertical to horizontal. What is arm slots all about? I hope you can help answer this, throwing is an art and most cricketers I see have custard arms, which is a little embarrassing considering it's a skill used as much as batting, bowling and catching."

Recently, I went to Chelmsford, home of Essex County Cricket Club, to catch up with Graham Gooch. The first topic of conversation was, of course, England's dramatic World Cup failure.

When we are looking for players at cricket trials there are some important qualities beyond runs and wickets and stat figures.

There's a battle for the heart and soul of cricket right now.

It's a battle that is shaping cricketers and cricket teams at every level. Get it right and you could be pushing yourself to new heights. Get it wrong and you will be languishing on the sidelines forever.

Each side thinks they know all the answers. if the other side just listened to common sense for a moment, they say in frustration, we would all realise the truth. We would all be better players.

So what is the truth?

Which side should you take in this epic war?
