Quick Tip: Be Your Own Coaching Manual

How many players over the years have had success with unorthodox techniques?
It would be easier to list those who have been top players and been totally orthodox! That's because the human body is tremendously variable between people. We move differently. We think differently.
On top of this variation is the opinions of the different coaches you will experience as you play. Everyone likes to have a say from club and school coach to parent and even higher levels. There are many coaches at different levels of skill with many ideas on how to help you.
The only way to unpick all that is to be your own coaching manual.
Your Chance to Bowl Fast in India
Ian Pont has launched the Ultimate Pace Foundation in Bangalore: The chance for any Indian fast bowler to learn how to bowl faster. Ian explains why he set up his fast bowling academy, and how to join.
Every fast bowler would take an extra yard of pace.
Yet, India has not produced genuine fast bowlers. There is no genetic or physical reason for this. The only thing it can be is that young bowlers are not encouraged to bowl straight and fast like in Pakistan.
That's what I want to change at the Ultimate Pace Foundation.
I want Indian bowlers to come and take their chance to become a fast bowler. I want to have bowlers who have a heart for bowling fast. I want to break the tradition of being satisfied with being a trundler.

Quick Tip: Captains are Like Chess Grand Masters

Captaincy is one of the most fun parts of the game. It makes the already mentally tough game into a tactical puzzle akin to a game of chess.
So when you are skipper it behoves you to think like a chess grandmaster.
Top chess players are able to think many moves far ahead in the game. They quickly process the possibilities of each move by themselves and their opponents. This is exactly how a good captain operates.
It's a cliché to think someone who asks "who's winning?" knows nothing about cricket. It's also true, except for the advanced cricket captain, who is always asking that very question.
Ask the Readers: What Are You Working On?
We all know the benefits of purposeful practice, for players and for cricket coaches at every level. If you have no purpose, you have no reason to be at practice.
But that is easy to forget sometimes, especially when a net is running itself and everyone is getting a go. Things drift quickly. I want to prevent that so I want to know:
What are you working on right now?

Don't underestimate the power of coaching the basics well.
Think of good progressive coaching in building blocks: keep building the pyramid from the bottom up. It takes much longer to get it right unless you technically prepare players for the next level.
