Out of Form... Open the Batting

Why would anyone try to go up the order and face the demons of the new ball if they are out of form?

It’s not as crazy as it sounds.

Think back to a period of games where you have declared yourself out of form.

The symptoms vary: lack of footwork, late timing and poor shot selection; often many put together.

You need time to get your eye back in and rebuild your shattered confidence.

Batting partnerships are crucial to the success of a batting side: a good partnership completely changes the momentum of a game.

Two or three good partnerships is enough to win the match.

Ask the Readers: Give your Batting Advice

The most successful article I ever wrote on PitchVision Academy is nothing to do with me: it was advice that you dear reader gave on bowling.

(It’s so good, the discussion is continuing even now, check it out).

I love how the site generates so much discussion so now I’m opening up the floor to those with a passion for batting.

Here is the question to stir your batting mind:

How to Play Like JP Duminy

Gifted international batsman, athletic fielder and IPL superstar: JP Duminy even has a bit of a bowl.

There’s no doubt he is a thoroughly modern professional cricketer, and one that has worked hard to become successful. You could do a lot worse than emulate him.

How to Bat on a Bad Pitch

Club cricketer and controversial PitchVision Academy columnist AB is back with his views on playing on dodgy tracks.

The "up and down" pitch is a nightmare: one moment a full length ball balloons up to chest height, and two balls later a short delivery shoots though by the shins.

How on earth are you supposed to deal with this?

2 Reasons You Are Not Timing the Ball Well

This is a guest article from club player AB about 2 common mistakes all batsmen make when trying to time the ball well and score runs.

I’m sure you have said it:

"I just couldn't get my timing right on that slow pitch"

Or you heard a coach say, "you don't need to hit it hard, just time it nicely".

But what does that actually mean?

Here’s a Simple Formula for Batting Success

This is a guest article from club cricketer AB, simplifying the decision making process when you bat.

The batsman sits glumly on the grass, still in his pads even though he is out.

His captain tries to offer some condolences; "it was the right shot to play, you just didn't execute it correctly" or maybe he says "you picked the wrong ball to play that shot".

What Your Leave Says About Your Batting

Filed in:

We often consider the leave to be the absence of a shot. The bowler bowls; the batsman leaves; nothing happens.

In fact, it’s far more important than nothing because it tells you a great deal about your approach to batting.

When the ball is left, the bowler feels she is not doing her job; to make the batsman play. So she straightens her line and the ball can be worked easily into the leg side.

In 2002 Michael Vaughan was in imperious form and it was a pull shot that set the tone.
